Goals: Though his life has become more complicated, Essek continues to pursue his goal to explore the limits of dunamancy, particularly not that he is free of the direct scrutiny of his culture. He believes there is more to the artifacts of his people (ostensibly pieces of a god) than they are willing to see. He wishes only for the freedom to know.
Morals: "My intentions were never good. They were important." He has never really wanted power, only answers. Or, at the very least, the freedom to pursue answers. Power allowed him access to resources he may not otherwise get his hands on.
Struggles: In the past, Essek saw relationships (platonic, professional, or otherwise) as an unnecessary risk to his ultimate goals. He was reclusive and tended to isolate himself. He says, "I have never really been trusted and so I did not trust. And I never let anyone close" when explaining his circumstances to another character and because of his isolation and his academic ambitions, he was taken in by someone who was ready to prey on his cynicism and desire for knowledge.
Position: Faculty
Explanation: Essek is an expert in his field - he has been actively studying and practicing for no less than 100 years. He's also pushed further into his area of research (dunamancy) than others in his culture, his knowledge and willingness to explore things considered "heretical" are key to that. All arcane schools require confidence and willpower, but dunamancy (which involves manipulating time and space) in particular - and the kinds of study and practice Essek in particular engages in - requires precision and commitment. Though relatively young for an elf, he's been practicing for longer than some species live. If we need to translate this into a more mundane/less magic-based field, he'd be a theoretical physicist. Essek is very passionate about his field... and he could absolutely become the professor that half his students fear and the other half find rigorous but worth it. Every college needs at least one prof with a reputation of "he will make you better at what you do but be ready to cry when you read his feedback."
